Beginner learning to play the drums

Drum Lessons for Beginners

School of Rock offers simple yet effective drum lessons for beginners that bypass entry-level pad training. Students get behind a drum kit during their first lesson to start learning how to play the drums. Through private drum lessons, group rehearsals, and live performances, students will learn introductory rudiments to drum fills and solos. School of Rock has been teaching drum lessons to kids and adults for decades and we have given more drummers a start in the business than any other music program in the world. Our core philosophy is that the best way for students to gain musical proficiency is through the patented School of Rock Method and performance-based music education. All of our programs (even the beginner drum programs for kids like Rookies and Rock 101) include a performance aspect.

Intermediate to Advanced Drum Lessons

When a student progresses beyond beginner drum lessons, they will move to School of Rock's intermediate to advanced drum lessons programs (Performance, House Band, and AllStars), putting them on the path to mastery. During weekly private lessons and group rehearsals, our expert drum teachers guide students through advanced drumming techniques and training methods aimed at making them more skilled drummers. Advanced intermediary grooves, shifts and meters are taught and drilled until perfected. Drummers will ultimately be placed in bands and perform in live shows at the end of each session.

TAKE DRUM LESSONS ONLINE AND IN-SCHOOL

At School of Rock, the health and safety of our students is our top priority. We’re offering online music lessons in addition to in-person socially-distanced classes. Students choosing to take drum lessons online are taught using the same famous, patented curriculum we use in our schools—The School of Rock Method™. This approach couples in-person or online drum lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

FAQ

How much do drum lessons cost?

Depending on the program, School of Rock's drum lessons can cost from around $275 to $450 or more per month. Exact prices may vary between locations. What's included? Unlike most hourly drum lessons, our programs include weekly private drum lessons and group rehearsals that inspire confidence and teamwork. Does School of Rock offer drum lessons for 4-year-olds?

While four years old is a little young for formal drum lessons, it's not too early to begin teaching your child musical concepts that will be important once they are old enough for drum instruction at School of Rock. Your 4-year-old can participate in the Little Wing music program to learn fundamental concepts through fun, dynamic musical activities.

Should I have my own drum set, or does School of Rock provide one?

Students are encouraged to purchase their own drums, especially as they reach higher skill levels. School of Rock does let kids borrow drums for rehearsal, but for best results our drum teachers recommend students to have a drum set at home for daily practice, and a practice kit is a good, quiet option.

How long will it take for my child to get good at playing the drums?

With steady practice, our drum lessons for kids can have your child playing with basic proficiency in as little as 6 months. Some students reach the level of advanced drummers in as few as 3-5 years, but it does vary.

Learning to play the drums doesn't stop once your child leaves the classroom. To see best results, our drum teachers recommend that students spend at least 30 minutes every day practicing the drums.

Do you offer private drum lessons?

At School of Rock, we teach private drums lessons in-person or online in conjunction with weekly band rehearsals meant to build confidence and teamwork. While we do offer private drum instruction, we strongly encourage students to play in band rehearsals as a way of exploring group dynamics as they become more proficient on the drums.

Does School of Rock have tips for learning to play the drums?

At School of Rock, our drum instructors encourage students to regularly practice, use reliable equipment, and most importantly ask questions. We start with teaching key skills like rudiments, tempo, rhythm, and how to set up a drum set. Our approach enables students to succeed and make learning fun.

What is the best age to start drum lessons for kids?

All students are different, and some are ready to play before others. As a parent, you can look for signs that your child is ready for drum lessons. Check out our resource on the best age to learn to play drums for more information.

Do you offer online music lessons?
