Owner Marc Gurley
Marc Gurley
Owner
Marc's musical journey began at age 11 when he agreed to play drums with a band performing Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" live in front of his entire school. The only problem was he had never even held drumsticks in his hands! He pulled it off on sheer will and was hooked for life. From there he went on to play drums, keys and sing lead vocals with multiple rock bands. His career includes time as the frontman for the original line-up of alternative rock band Dust for Life. With DFL he recorded an album at Powerhouse Studios which went on to gain top rotation on rock radio, and he and DFL performed and shared the bill on a regular basis with powerhouse acts such as Saliva, King's X and Drivin N' Cryin to name a few. Marc is a graduate of Memphis University School and went on to earn a BA in Business Management from Southern Methodist University. He owned and operated a successful multi-unit golf retail business. However, the passion for music never faded, and School of Rock popped up on Marc's radar once he began to explore selling the golf business. As a father of three, Marc immediately understood the mission of School of Rock. In 2012 he joined the School of Rock family and he was lucky enough to do it in the birthplace of rock n' roll, Memphis. Then in 2018, he purchased the other local school, School of Rock Germantown.

Bass Guitar Teacher, Guitar Teacher Ryan Temple
Ryan Temple
Bass Guitar Teacher, Guitar Teacher
Ryan Temple got his start playing guitar and bass in praise bands in Central Mississippi at age 18. He then started school at Mississippi State where he continued to play guitar and bass in the Starkville music scene with bands such as Crimson Waters and Sanford. Both of those bands went on to make various recordings in the studio.

After graduating from Mississippi State with a bachelor’s degree in Business, Communications, and Psychology, Ryan took a 10-year break from music and took a more traditional career path in Finance and Insurance. But after ending up in the music-rich area of Memphis, TN, he really started to miss playing. Ryan ended up joining the longtime Memphis area Power Pop band, Lately David, as their lead guitarist in 2015. He then later began missing the bass guitar and eventually found himself playing bass in the Memphis-based Country and Southern Rock band, Whiskey South. Both bands have gone on to release multiple songs and even music videos. Whiskey South also won a Tommy Award for Best Country Act in 2023.

In 2022, Ryan’s son wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and started taking drum lessons at School of Rock. Ryan and his wife were so impressed with the program and the people at School of Rock that he decided to get in on the action and joined the School of Rock team as a guitar and bass instructor.

Ryan continues to play guitar in Lately David and bass in Whiskey South and has a few new projects on the horizon. While he also enjoys helping clients in his insurance business, Ryan continues to get more involved with his love of music in the form of music production.
